Bhutan Travel Information

Everything you need to know before traveling with Happy Dream Adventure

Bhutan Visa

A visa is required for most travelers to enter Bhutan and can be processed by us. Simply submit a copy of your passport (valid for at least 6 months), and we’ll handle the application—typically approved within 3 working days.

Travelers from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives enjoy visa-free entry with a valid passport or voter ID (Indian nationals).

Accommodation

Choose from government-approved hotels ranging from comfortable 3-star stays to luxury 5-star retreats like Amankora or Taj Tashi.

Farm stays offer authentic rural experiences with home-cooked meals, while camping options are available for multi-day hikes and treks.

Food

Bhutanese cuisine is bold and spicy, with chilies featured in most dishes. Popular meals include Ema Datshi, Kewa Datshi, and Shamu Datshi.

Enjoy local red rice served with lentil stew (Dhal), and feel free to request reduced spice levels.

Dress Code

Tourists can dress freely but modesty is essential when visiting monasteries and Dzongs. Wear long pants and covered shoulders.

Remove hats and shoes inside religious sites. You may also try traditional attire like the Gho or Kira.

Religion

Bhutan primarily follows Mahayana Buddhism, with Hinduism practiced widely in the south. The country promotes strong religious tolerance.

Communication

Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafes. Purchasing a local SIM card in Paro or Thimphu is the most cost-effective option.

Weather

From September to March, expect cold weather and snowfall above 3000m. June to August brings warmer temperatures and monsoon rains.

Currency

The Ngultrum (Nu.) is Bhutan’s official currency. Indian Rupees are accepted, and ATMs are available in major towns.

Transportation

Travel comfortably in tourist vehicles ranging from Coaster buses to SUVs and Land Cruisers, driven by licensed professionals.

Health & Safety

Consult your doctor before travel for recommended vaccinations. Bhutan is very safe, but keep valuables secure and drink bottled water.

Language

Dzongkha is the national language, but English is widely spoken, making communication easy throughout the country.
